Robert A. Jones - Lighting Designer

Robert Jones has a strong theatre background having worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company for some 12 years before going freelance. Robert has 24 years lighting design experience covering Theatre, Opera, Corporate Events, Conferences, Exhibitions, Product and Brand Launches, Themed Events, Retail and Leisure Installations. He thoroughly enjoys the creative process whether working on projects large or small as well as utilising techniques and technologies from one discipline to another.

Exhibitions

Lighting Consultant to Rover Group Exhibitions covering all major International Motor Shows. Work also included designs for the launch of New Range Rover, Rover 24/45, Rover 200 Coupe, 600 and MGF amongst others. Special Projects included Range Rover Animation and Mini in a box display. Other corporate exhibition clients include:
Xerox - Stand at IPEX (most of Hall 3 at NEC)
PlayStation - Themed Event (most of Hall 1 Earls Court)
Motorola - Stands at Ce-bit, FAM, CTIA, CES
Subaru - Legacy Launch and stand at the British Motor Show, NEC
Sony, Lucent, Samsonite and Marks and Spencer

Corporate Events and Conferences

Lighting designs for a wide range of event projects for clients across many industry sectors including Panasonic, Barclays, Capital One, Motorola, Cadburys, Astra Zeneca, Network Rail, Zurich, Novartis, Dyson, Gillette.

7 large scale international events for Hewlett Packard/Compaq for between 2000/4000 PAX which have included extensive stage sets, experiential marketing zones, exhibition pavilions and features, breakouts, hospitality, gala events as well as external lighting. All of these events have taken place in major international venues.

Themed Events

PlayStation event covering all of Hall 1 at Earls Court. Divided into themed areas lighting designs were created to differentiate zones by atmosphere and a Main Stage was lit for music events.

Numico event in Dubai for 200 people with four differently themed days where lighting played a major part particularly through the use of animated effects on the cyclorama. Almost all equipment was sourced locally in Dubai.

MasterCard event in Seville’s Opera House themed around different operas using professional singers and performers and many theatrical techniques.

Themed hospitality event for the Saudi Government at The World Economic Forum in Davos, working around tight schedules and security.

Retail and Leisure

Designed and pioneered a system for Selfridges Oxford Street windows utilising programmed colour changing and gobo projection. This led to a variety of display and promotion commissions both window and store based including fashion and other shows. Designs for the front 12 windows have been wide ranging and covered a number of leading brands in particular fashion and beauty products.

Designs for a number of permanent (and semi-permanent installations) including the Tobacco Factory Bar, Centre Parcs, Expo-theme parks at Neuchâtel, Vodafone Experience Area at Newbury, The Natural State as well as consulting on a number of theatre buildings including The Other Place and The Donmar Warehouse.

A number of private commissions including a swimming pool in its own purpose built Dorset barn.

Site specific Special Projects, Opera Circus and Theatre

Robert has a longstanding connection with Birmingham Opera and has lit 15 productions for the company (Artistic Director Graham Vick) all of which have been staged in unusual venues and circumstances in Birmingham city centre including, Birmingham Museum store, a big top, Central TV/ old ATV Studios, in an old car factory, a bank, a disused ice rink, the new Bull Ring Shopping Centre and on a canal under a railway viaduct!

Robert recently lit the son et lumiere televised for the Trafalgar 200 celebrations in Portsmouth, he has also enjoyed running off with the circus in the form of “No fit state” based in Cardiff.

Robert has other technical and production experience having project managed and produced a number of car launches and displays at exhibitions for the Rover Group.
He also has valuable management experience from his RSC days having been Technical Director for The Other Place Theatre.
