Ben Pacey - Lighting Designer

Ben specialises in dance and theatre lighting design, including work with devising companies, and working in unusual/site-specific spaces.

Theatre

His recent lighting design for theatre includes It Is Like It Ought To Be – A Pastoral for Uninvited Guests (national tour 2006); Frozen, The Birthday Party and After Miss Julie in rep at Theatre by the Lake (2006); Your Hand In Mine for Wishbone (Lyric Hammersmith Studio 2007); national tours of Shiver and Bella and the Beautiful Knight for Silver Tongue Theatre (2005-7); a site-specific Antigone for InSite Performance (Walworth Council Chambers, 2005); and This Lime Tree Bower for The Young Vic (Theatre 503, 2005).

Dance

Recent lighting design for dance includes Rise for Tom Dale, Handmade/Manmade, She Lies With Me and Stuffed for Wired Aerial Theatre (Royal Opera House and tours); the winner of the Place Prize 2006 - Quick! for Nina Rajarani, also Quiet Please! and Mirage for Nina Rajarani; Forest for Maxine Doyle and Felix Barrett (Place Prize semi-finalist, 2006); Disgo for Fleur Darkin (Place Prize semi-finalist, 2006); and Ruins for Anurekha Ghosh (international tour, 2005).

Devised Performance

Recent devised work includes artistic collaboration/lighting design I Am Waiting For The Opportunity To Save Someone's Life (Mailbox, 2006) and Treasured (mac, 2006) for The Other Way Works. As a member of Mapping4D he has collaborated on, and designed light for Slender (BAC, 2006) and Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award winning production The Pink Bits (Riverside Studios, 2004). He has recently collaborated on the development of A Small Town Anywhere at the National Theatre Studio, for Coney.

Art Events

Ben has recently collaborated with artist Lali Chetwynd on her performance events The Fall of Man – A Puppet Extravaganza (Tate Britain, 2006) and Delirious (Serpentine Pavilion, 2006).

 

V&A Exhibition

Ben's lighting design for "I Am Waiting For The Opportunity To Save Someone's Life" has been selected for the "Collaborators: UK Design for Performance 2003-2007" Exhibition at the V&A in London. His design is shown as a series of lightboxes, and forms a part of this excellent display of contemporary UK theatre design. The exhibition runs until 18 November 2008.
